The NDP just released a new all-By-election website this afternoon, "Unite4Change.ca", which has a fairly red-looking orange background, and a very Obama-like blue graphic of leader Jack Layton looking into the distance and encouraging people to install the party's brand-new Facebook application, also called "Unite4Change".
So, I decided to check out the five major parties' websites and survey what kind of online presence they've established specifically for the by-elections. This new feature "
Party Web Watch" is a companion to the twice-weekly "
Facebook Watch" we're already running at the Pundits' Guide.
Liberals: They have established a page for the by-election candidates in the "News room" section at their party web-site, a graphical link to which is featured on a rotating basis from the site's main page. The page itself features graphical links to each of the three September 8 candidates' web-sites, a bio of each of the three, email contact links for volunteering, and links to a secure site for riding-specific donations. Marc Garneau, their candidate in
Westmount – Ville-Marie, QC is featured first, followed by Roxanne Stanners in
Saint-Lambert, QC, and finally Frank Valeriote from
Guelph, ON. On peut trouver exactement la même chose
en français.
NDP: Just updated the "unite4change.ca" domain-name they own to be a by-election-specific website (la version française est "
lepouvoirdechanger.ca"). The main focus of the page is a graphical link that takes the visitor to Facebook to install the "Unite4Change" Facebook app. Also featured prominently down the right-hand column are "act now" links to get a sign, join the party, volunteer, or subscribe to their e-newsletter, followed by a link to Layton's own Facebook profile, and links to issue sections on the party's Environmental plan, and its campaign on Text Messaging fees. Links to pages at the party by-election web-site for each of the four by-election candidates, featuring their bio, a link to their own web-page plus a link to their Facebook profile page, are shown all in a row below the main Layton graphic.
Greens: Set up a "Take Action" page on the party web-site, linked to by a rotating graphical link from their main page. Has photos of each of the four by-election candidates, with
Guelph, ON candidate Mike Nagy at the top, along with links to their web-pages, email addresses, office addresses, and Facebook pages. They also have a fundraising goal thermometer on their main page showing progress against their goal of $65,000 (they report having raised $43,936 as of today). On trouve la même chose encore
en français.
Bloc Québécois: Have a special page on the party website for "Les partielles 2008", which features photos of both candidates (with
Saint-Lambert, QC candidates Josée Beaudin featured first), information about how to vote, and links to a party website page for each one. The candidates do not appear to have separate websites (although
Westmount – Ville-Marie, QC candidate Charles LaRivée, being younger and a university student, has a presence on Facebook; see below). Pas disponible en anglais.
Conservatives: No special by-election page evident, ni en anglais, ni en français non plus. In fact their website was actually down for at least 3 hours tonight, from 6 PM or earlier to sometime around 9 PM. As a result, I now have the IP address of their database server, but am unsure what this piece of information might fetch on eBay. Should have snarfed a screenshot while I had the chance (rats) ... looks like my "opposition research" skills are a bit rusty. There is a link to Stephen Harper's Facebook profile from their main page, however.
I am not qualified enough to provide a professional assessment of the effectiveness of the parties' web presences. However, I can refer you to the "Fagstein" blog of Montréal Gazette copy editor Steve Faguy, where he recently conducted
a review of the
Westmount – Ville-Marie, QC candidates' Facebook campaigns. In the comments section, we learn that Bloc candidate Charles LaRivée has recently established a Facebook politician profile page, which we'll be adding to our Facebook Watch update tomorrow night.
