More Nomination Updates
- Vancouver South, BC - I've now been able to confirm that Wai Young was indeed acclaimed last Wednesday July 15 as the Conservative candidate in this riding. At the end of the riding's candidate search process she was the only person to come forward, and was approved by the riding's executive in time to be introduced at last Wednesday's dinner. She will face three-term Liberal M.P. and former NDP Premier Ujjal Dosanjh, whom she came within 20 votes of defeating in the last election. Should be a race to watch out west!
- Pontiac, QC - A reader has written to say that it is by no means certain that former Liberal M.P. Robert Bertrand will be running for the nomination here, but meantime in a clipping I missed from yesterday, Le Droit is reporting another name entering the race. Georges Lafontaine is a former aide to provincial Liberal MLAs in the Pontiac area, and would have been active in now-Conservative M.P. Lawrence Cannon's former provincial campaigns as well, my source says. A writer, Lafontaine is currently working for the Algonquin first nation in Maniwaki after spending several years writing novels, and will be competing with Cindy Duncan McMillan and Greg Fergus at the September meeting.

it will be interesting to see if vancouver south is that close again as no one really saw it being that close last time although wai young was a good candidate its just the riding hasn't been that close in recent years before 2008 so it wasn't on anyone radar .
on pontiac , thats a riding i'm less familar with although been to the ridings it borders in ontario before . it has been a bit of a 3 way race so the bloc nomination is also a big factor here as they have not ever won the riding but still have alot of supporters there . well the riding has historically been liberal i'm not sure any of the potential liberal candidates have the profile of lawrence cannon so thats an interesting factor that will be in play there . the liberals may lead the cpc in the polls in quebec but cannon has the seat at the cabinet table and much more profile than any of the liberals could ever hope to have .
Hi Anon, Neither are ridings I'm familiar with in great detail. In 2006 Ujjal Dosanjh raised more money than any other candidate in the country (well over $200K) but only spent 71% of the limit. This time, he raised less, but got unusually large transfers from the central campaign, and wound up spending a lot closer to the limit (87%), although less than Ms. Young's 94%.
As to Pontiac, I'm reminded that contested Liberal nominations there have defied expectations in the past: for example, Ms. Duncan McMillan was a surprise victor over Richard Mahoney for the nomination last time, after Liberal Leader Stéphane Dion asked Mahoney to step aside from Ottawa Centre for Ms. Collenette last time.
Again, thanks for taking the time to comment.
Georges Lafontaine...
Very fishy stuff, he would be running against his former accomplice? hmmm...
But then again, things have always been fishy in that riding since Martin was PM
It's official, Robert Bertrand is not running in Pontiac.
Hi Anons 8:07 and 8:09, thanks for the updates. I know there was a get-together with area Liberal candidates tonight in downtown Ottawa, so I expect we'll be hearing a bit more news in coming days as well.
Not really nomination related per se, but Janet Yale, Greg Fergus, and Steve McKinnon are all using the same web marketing company (Pondstone Communications) and share many supporters, making them an unoffical "slate".
Hi Anon 10:17 pm,
Thanks, that's interesting. I wonder if you're saying between the lines that they are the unofficial "preferred slate" of the leader or the headquarters, or just whether they are just fellow travellers.
It certainly bears watching, and thanks for providing this context.
The Conservatives apparently have also acclaimed two female candidates who ran last time, both in Windsor: Denise Ghanam and Lisa Lumley.
Hey Anon, Thanks very much for the heads-up. Will include in the next update!
