Nomination News: Some Liberal Competition in Newmarket – Aurora

Thanks to a reader for this heads-up:
  • Newmarket – Aurora, ON - If 2008 Liberal candidate Tim Jones wants to run in the next election (as previously reported here), he'll have to win a contested nomination first, it now appears, as Newmarket Ward 7 councillor Chris Emanual has kicked off his own campaign to win the right to represent their party in the next election. No word yet on when the nomination meeting will be held. The riding is held by first-term Conservative M.P. Lois Brown.
The reader also passes along that:
  • St. Catharines, ON - After his last unsuccessful attempt to win back his old seat, former Liberal M.P. Walt Lastewka has apparently indicated that he won't be running again. Two-term Conservative M.P. Rick Dykstra currently holds the seat. Lastewka outspent Dykstra (97% vs. 87%), but was decisively outpolled in 2008 after narrowly losing the seat to him in 2006.
St. Catharines is another case of a riding that had a narrow margin in one election, changed hands, and no longer showed a narrow margin. Turnout was also clearly an issue, as the Liberal vote declined by a third between 2006 and 2008, while the Conservative raw vote only increased by a few thousand votes.

If you know of candidates who are getting ready to run, please write in and share the information.

the st catherines news isn't surprising , well at first the liberals were ok with walt lastewka running again last election but on other sites the comments started to go negative near the end of the election they became discouraged with him and embarrased that he had to re-use signs from a previous election . and started to suggest that maybe they needed a new candidate . so this isn't that surprising . anyways i suspect the liberals still have miles to go before they actualy win back any of the niagara seats even if they find a new candidate here .

Anon, wasn't there some kind of story in that riding about a newsletter ... gosh, refresh my memory. It was either something Dykstra released about Lastewka, or the other way around. Do you recall what the story was?

i just remember what i have seen in the news or other political sites , did remember reading an article where lastewka was upset about all the 10 center's dykstra had seen out in that riding . although i don't remember there being anything specific in them he was upset about .

Lastewka's EDA president had made an inappropriate joke about assassinating the prime minister in their EDA newsletter, and it was released on a day when Stephane Dion was visiting Niagara.

Lastewka is probably out, but who knows... the real story will be the lack of credible Liberal candidates in St. Catharines the next time around. Dykstra is very well entrenched.

Thanks for the refresher, nikto. And, as you mention, Incumbency can have its benefits, although we all know that nothing is ever guaranteed.
