List of 2008 Candidates who have stepped down

LAST UPDATED: Saturday September 13, 2008.

Here is my first attempt at assembling a list of candidates who have stepped down for one reason or another, by party, in regional and then roughly chronological order.

As always, it's the network of Pundits' Guide readers that really improves on this kind of data, so if you can help fill in any blanks, or know of other names, don't hesitate to get in touch. [UPDATE: Several folks did just this, and their corrections are shown below. thanks!]

First a summary ...
  • Liberals: 27 candidates resigned or stepped down, 16 of whom have been replaced or have nomination meetings scheduled [UPDATE: In fact, 3 of them have re-enlisted themselves]. Add this to 9 incumbents already retired, and 14 who have now announced they will not seek re-election.
  • NDP: 26 candidates resigned or stepped down, 15 of whom have been replaced (in 5 cases by themselves after running provincially) or have nomination meetings scheduled. Add this to 3 incumbents who have announced they will not seek re-election.
  • Conservatives: 16 candidates resigned or stepped down, 8 of whom have been replaced. Add this to 10 incumbents who have announced they will not seek re-election.
  • Greens: 10 candidates resigned or stepped down, 7 of whom have been replaced or have nomination meetings scheduled.
  • Bloc Québécois: No record of any 1 candidate(s) resigned or stepped down. However, 1 incumbent is deceased, 3 have already retired, and 4 others have announced she will not seek re-election.

A couple of notes:

  • Jane Purves, often mentioned as a Conservative candidate who stepped down in Halifax, NS, in fact was never nominated to the best of my knowledge.
  • Same goes for Conservative Joe Goudie in Labrador, so far as I can tell.
  • New Democrat Randall Garrison's replacement was in fact selected just yesterday, when Michael Byers was formally nominated to represent the NDP in Vancouver Centre, B.C. against long-time Liberal M.P. Hedy Fry.
OK now, it's time for you all to help make this list complete, and correct any boo-boos!

[UPDATE: Welcome National Newswatch readers.]

Why is this interesting or important?

You know darn well, some have stepped down due to age, etc.

Pathetic.

Who the hell cares, as long as good candidates replace them?

I'm not sure that Halton belongs on this list. That was a floor-crossing. If it does belong then shouldn't Khan, Emerson, Cozmussi's ridings (I may be missing some) also go on the list?

Anon 4:44, bad night's sleep?

This is jus raw data, people should just make of it what they wish.

Anonymous 4:44 AM: I compiled the list because I knew it was going to be the story of the day, and that otherwise people would not have a well-rounded enough dataset to work from. I completely agree that the reasons are quite varied which is why I tried to document them.

Jarrid: Halton is there because Mr. Turner was actually nominated as a Conservative before he was nominated as a Liberal. In my books that does count as an interesting piece of trivia.

But, oh boy, and am I ever glad you commented, because I just checked and the same could be said of Wajid Khan in Mississauga – Streetsville: first as a Liberal and then as a Conservative, which I didn't realize. I'm going to have to add him to keep the criteria consistent (probably won't get done until after work tonight, though).

Joe Comuzzi was never nominated as a Liberal, because at the time he had planned to retire. He now vigourously denies that he has absolutely decided to retire, but there is another nominated Conservative in his riding of Thunder Bay – Superior North.

Is there somewhere on this site with a list of incumbents who are not running again? I did a quick search and couldn't find it anywhere.

CalgaryGrit: You want the "Search the Database" page (from the top menu; or else pick "Search" from the side menu; or just click here).

Look under the first heading: "Queries for Current Election(s)", and then its second sub-heading "Nominations Progress".

There you'll find two links: "Nominations Progress in Ridings with Retiring Incumbents" and "Nomination Progress in Ridings with First-Time Incumbents".

If you click on either of those latter two hyperlinks it runs the queries live and returns the latest results into a table right there on the page, which you can then toggle to hide and/or show again.

The retiring incumbents are down the left hand side of the first table. However, if the incumbent has already been replaced in a by-election, you'll find the replacement listed as a first-time incumbent down the left-hand side in the second table.

That's as good as it gets right now, I'm afraid. Maybe I should just add a list too, if that's what you're telling me.

Under Halton, you have Rick MAlboeuf as replacing Garth Turner.

This is factually incorrect as we have not yet been released for a candidate search and we have many nomination hopefuls waiting in the wings.

Paul M: That would be trusty old Wikipedia again. Its candidate lists have failed me more often than not. I'll make the correction this evening when I get home. Thank you very much for taking the point to correct this point.

Hi anonymous 10:06 AM: Yes, I included him in the count of 3 Bloc incumbents who have already retired (along with Michel Gauthier and Yvan Loubier) in the summary section. Maybe that distinction seems a bit artificial to people ... if so, I apologize for the confusion.

Thanks for readnig!

Better yet, a list of the incumbents we wish would not run again.

You know, somehow I'm guessing everyone's list of those would be a little different from everyone else's. ;-)

You have Michael Butler down as the NDP's candidate in AB - Edmonton - Mill Woods - Beaumont. That is not the case. The August 25th meeting was delayed due to a variety of procedural problems (too many new members to process) and will be held at a later date that has yet tbd. There are still at least 2 NDP'ers vying for this nomination, a Della Drury and Michael Butler. Both of these folks ran in the 08 AB provincial election for the AB NDP.

Anon Sep 2: Thank you very much for this information. I will adjust the database and this list accordingly. I just assumed the August 25 meeting had taken place and didn't hear about any other name. Silly me.

In London Fanshawe, Dan--not Ed-- Mailer announced he was not seeking the nomination (he had been the candidate last time around). Katz was replaced with Mary Lou Ambrogio.
