Four fall by-elections in the offing?
If the government does not fall this spring, we may see another round of four by-elections in the autumn: two each in Ontario and Québec.
- Bloc Québécois M.P. (Saint-Lambert, QC) Maka Kotto's resignation in order to run for the PQ in the next provincial election took effect Thursday, March 13, 2008.
- Liberal M.P. (Guelph, ON) Brenda Chamberlain, who had already announced that she would not run again, has recently announced that she will step down effective April 7, 2008.
- Westmount – Ville-Marie, QC has been vacant since Liberal M.P. Lucienne Robillard's resignation took effect on January 25, and
- Don Valley West, ON will be vacant on July 1, when Liberal M.P. John Godfrey's resignation takes effect.
Should that occur, the Liberals have 4 nominated candidates in place already (1 of whom is female); the Conservatives have 3/4 (including 1 woman), and the NDP and Greens each have 2/4 (all male so far).
